BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR

We’re working on National Emergency Response Hazmat Drills Volume 2 (NEHRD 2). Want to become a published author and make a difference in our community? Join us! We’re looking for the best minds to collaborate and create a valuable resource for our technicians. If you’re interested, fill out the initial interest form, and let’s get started.

Have questions? Check out our list of FAQs below to get the details on what the process looks like, how to submit, and what our criteria for selected drills will be.

Before we accept your drill, we need to know what we’re working with. Complete the Topic Submission Form with your first and last name, your email address, and the topic you want to cover. We will also allow you to explain that topic in a short sentence or two.

WHAT IS NERHD

In 2018, we took the initiative to gather hazmat techs from around the world and write drills to help all instructors provide the best training to their members. The book has been selling exceptionally well for years, allowing us to build more courses for technicians in the field. Well, it’s time for us to do this again, and that’s where you come in.

This is not just any book; it’s a book of dozens (and hopefully hundreds) of hazmat drills that operators and officers can use as a guide during their training sessions.

Think about it… Wouldn’t it be great to pick up a book, flip to a page, and have all the info for quality instruction right at your fingertips?

NERHD AUTHOR FAQ

This FAQ will be updated with any new questions that arise. Please check this page before reaching out with inquiries.

Why should I submit a drill?

Though we’ve done this once before, being called a “published author” is nifty, and we hope you feel the same way! But really, the main reason we hope you’ll want to be involved is that you will be helping thousands (hopefully millions) of people become better techs.

Once the book is finished, we plan on selling it. However, proceeds from this project will go directly back into growing The HazMat Guys Learning Management System, an online platform that will eventually house hundreds (thousands…) of e-courses developed by members of the hazmat community (i.e., you!) from all over the world.

How can I contribute?

Your role as a contributor would be as a writer. Here’s how that will work:

  • Each drill must be submitted for pre-approval and must follow a specific template.
  • Once your final drill is finished and edited, you will officially earn the title “writer” for the book.
  • The book will be branded THE HAZMAT GUYS, and you will be listed inside the book (we, Bob and Mike, will also be listed as writers).
  • Each drill will be cretited to you, the writer, with your name and department.
  • If you’d like to be included in the Author Biography section, you’ll need to submit a minimum of three drills.

How should I submit a drill?

Submitting drills will work like this: We will supply you with a few completed drills to use as templates. You’ll come up with an idea for a drill (it can be short, sweet, or long and extensive—that’s your call). After the topic is approved, it’s yours to create.

What is the template process?

Our intention is to have a homogeneous book. There should be no indication that one author created drill #2 and another created drill #45.

  • You will be given two template drills from the last book. This is to provide a feel for the look and style we are looking for.

  • We may additionally create a shared folder with you. This will not always be the case; it is on a case-by-case basis.

How does the submission form work?

  • Submissions will be made via form links. All parts of the form must be filled out concisely.
  • You will receive an email with either an approval, denial, or suggestion to modify your submission.
  • Respect the decision if a submission is denied; it may be due to similarity with another submission.
  • Submissions are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

How will authors be credited?

  • All authors and their departments or organizations will be listed in the book.
  • The author’s name will appear with their drill on the page.
  • A minimum of 3 drills per person is required to be listed as a contributor.
  • Each drill must be pre-approved and follow a specific template.
  • Once your final drill is finished and edited, you will be officially recognized as a “writer” for the book.

What are the deadlines?

  • July 1: Topic submissions open
  • August 1: End topic submissions
  • October 1: Reminder for submissions
  • October 15: Finals due
  • November 1: Editing complete
  • December 1: Printing

How can I help get the word out?

  • Help us promote and sell the book. THMG will leverage its media presence, but we need your assistance in spreading the word.
  • We can assist you by providing a few social media templates you can send.
